City of Saint Anthony: A Brief History

Tagged: Apache Plaza, Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony Township, City of Saint Anthony, CIty History, Hennepin County,

St. Anthony, Minnesota started out as a township in 1861, and then became a village in 1945. It was officially a city in 1974, but the name of St. Anthony Village was so popular that the name stuck. The former St. Anthony township surrounded what is known as northeast Minneapolis. In 1887, Minneapolis completely annexed from the St. Anthony township. This resulted in less than two square miles of what is now the Hennepin County portion of St. Anthony, which was not included and remained an unincorporated area until 1945. The other portion of the city rests in Ramsey County.

St. Anthony is famous for the Apache Plaza which opened in 1961. It was the tenth mall to be opened in the United States. Due to economic strife, the mall ended up being shut down, but today new developments have taken its place. St. Anthony is a charming city full of historical buildings and culture.
